The Creator - The Created
Devotional - Psalm 19
Author/Background Info
This psalm is attributed to David; however, we have no certainty of the occasion upon which it was written. It happens to be one of the favorite portions of King David’s writings for many. I’m convinced it should be read often and with much awe and wonder.
Devotional Thought
King David starts this Psalm by introducing us to the two main ways that God reveals himself. They are: 1) his creation, and 2) his eternal word (scripture). He uses these two time-and-time again as a witness to his eternal power and nature.
The first revelation he addresses is what many would call the “wonder of creation.” Notice David’s remarks, “God’s splendor is a tale that is told, written in the stars. Space itself speaks his story through the marvels of the heavens…” (Vs. 1TPT) He goes on to explain how nature itself reveals God’s presence in the heavens (see Vs 3-6). I suggest you read it and be amazed!
The glory of creation is meant to make us wonder about the awesomeness of the universe and how it came into being. It makes us wonder who created it. In essence, it’s a call to seek a higher form of revelation. Although it’s wonderful, creation alone can never take us to the depths of God’s personhood.
In a brilliant way, David moves the psalm to the second form of revelation which would be the scriptures. He writes, “Yahweh’s decrees are trustworthy…Yahweh’s commands challenge us to keep close to his heart…Yahweh’s teachings are right and make us joyful… are sweeter than honey and honeycomb…(Vs. 8-10 TPT)
From his timer as shepherd boy he’s very familiar with the magnificence of creation, however, he wisely chooses scripture as the “higher form of revelation.”
Here’s the challenge for all humanity; to enjoy the creation without worshipping it. To see the splendor and magnificence of it, yet love and worship the creator more than the creation. (See Rom.1: 20-21 TPT)
So, the question remains, is there any adjustment you might need to make in this matter? Go ahead…think that through. It could be worth your time.
